A nautical oil painting featuring ships and fishermen at sea, created in the last year of the artist’s life. The work is signed and dated “W.H. Williamson / 1883” to the lower left, and presented in gold-tone gesso and wood frame.

William Henry Williamson was a British painter known for his coastal and marine paintings, often featuring the south coast of Britain. From 1853 to 1875, he exhibited his work at the Royal Academy, the British Institute, and Suffolk Street, among other places.

Condition

- craquelure throughout; stretcher marks particularly across the upper edge; areas of overpainting throughout particularly along the lower edge, above the cliffs to the left, and to the sky to the upper left and right; painting examined under black light; chip present to upper right of frame; loss and marks throughout finish of frame; abrasions, wear, and dents throughout the frame; cuts made to backing paper to the verso to examine the canvas.
