Item Details
A late 19th century walnut bookcase-on-collector’s cabinet, carved by the Cincinnati Art school, circa 1880 and removed from its original installation, in the McCullough house, Norwood, Ohio. The McCullough family owned the McCullough Seed Company in Cincinnati (Third St. and Eggleston Ave.). The upper bookcase features a palmette frieze, carved stiles and an open lower area with carved brackets. The right-hand side is ornately carved with a ribbon and foliate scroll, having the inscription, They whom truth and wisdom lead, can gather honey from a weed.The base cabinet features two recessed panel doors to the front and another to the right side, having carved rosettes. The left side has a plain recessed panel door and appears to have been built-in originally. The interior features twelve, narrow poplar drawers with inset brass ring pulls.
