Edwin Ellis was an English painter known especially for his seascapes of the British coast. After a brief and unsatisfying career designing lace patterns in Nottingham, he embarked on his fine art career under the tutelage of painter Henry Dawson. He then traveled to France to continue his education, after which he focused on the landscapes of Wales, Cornwall, and Yorkshire. Painting in both oils and watercolors, Ellis found success with numerous London exhibitions and as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
