Hurley was perhaps best known for his work with the Rookwood Pottery Company. He was an accomplished painter, printer, illustrator and author. Born in Cincinnati, Hurley would later graduate from Xavier University and the Cincinnati Art Academy. He was a designer for Rookwood Pottery Company from 1896-1948, creating paintings on both canvas and pottery. Cincinnati scenes had a strong hold on Hurley’s work and were his most prominent subject matter. His works have been exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, the St. Louis World’s Fair (1904), and more.
