Nelli Bar is best known for her work in figural sculpture as well as her marriage to painter Paul Weighardt (German/American; 1897-1969). She and her husband escaped Nazi Germany during World War II and eventually came to Chicago, where they both worked at the Art Institute. As a young woman, Weighardt-Bar studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, The School of Applied Arts in Cologne, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where she met Paul. After studying under Aristide Maillol in Paris, she was forced to flee Europe for the United States. Before ending up in Chicago, she taught in Massachusetts and Philadelphia, founding a small art school in the latter city. In 1946, they reached the city that would become their home for the remainder of their lives. Weighardt-Bar was an influential teacher at the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Chicago, the Illinois Institute of Chicago, and the Evanston Art Center. Her 1963 bronze sculpture titled “Standing Nude” is a part of the Hirshhorn Museum’s sculpture garden in Washington, D.C., alongside works by renowned artists like Auguste Rodin and Alexander Calder.
