Fine 17th Century Chinese Rhinoceros Horn Libation Cup

A phenomenal and rare 17th – 18th century Chinese rhinoceros horn libation cup. The piece, most likely of the Kangxi period, Qing Dynasty, is masterfully carved around the exterior with fine precision into a scene of a mountainous riverscape, with a scholar and his attendant standing on a rocky outcrop, amidst pine and wutong trees, the openwork handle in the form of a tangle of pine and wutong trunks reaching over the rim, the rivers leading simple dwelings. The horn of an attractive honey-brown tone, with spots of blonde in a few spots. Cups such as this were used in ancient Chinese rituals as an offering to a god in memory of those who have died. The Chinese believed that Rhinoceros horn had special powers and therefore a ideal tool to create a vessel to present drink to the gods.

Regulations that implement the ESA make it unlawful to import, export, take, transport, sell, purchase, or receive in interstate or foreign commerce any species listed as endangered or threatened. As such, this piece is only available for local pick up, and the winning bidder must present current proof of residence in the state of Ohio.
