A bronze and found object assemblage titled Airship by contemporary American artist Dennis Smith. This sculpture depicts a adventurous boy riding a inventive flying machine with his arms outstretched. The Airship is crafted from parts from typewriters, toys, tools and more. The sculpture is signed to the boy’s right leg. This work is equipped to hang with a wire.

Dennis Smith is best known for his sculptures of families and children discovering the world around them. In the early 1980’s he created life-sized sculptures for American Savings which were displayed in Salt Lake City and throughout Utah. Several of his other Airship sculptures have been on display at the Salt Lake City Airport. He has studied at Brigham Young University and the Danish Royal Academy in Copenhagen. He still maintains an active studio practice and is in hundreds of public and private collections across the globe.

Condition

- overall accretions to surface of sculpture; fabric has faded and presents spots of discoloration; areas of loose and detached stitching from edges of fabric; areas of oxidation and corrosion present on found objects; prior mounting hardware attached to sculpture; figure of sculpture is not mechanically attached and appears to be resting in the seat of the airship; back fin of airship appears to be loose and is tied in place with rope.
