Known for his ability to capture the effects of light in his countryside landscapes, Henri van der Hecht was a celebrated Belgian painter who studied under his father Guillaume van der Hecht and Jan Portaels at the Brussels Academy. He was particularly influenced by Gustave Courbet and artists of the Barbizon School. In 1868, with Joseph Coosemans, Edouard Huberti, and others, van der Hecht co-founded the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, which was an organization that provided free exhibition spaces for artists rejected by the Academy. His work has been collected by multiple museums in Belgium and other European countries.

- frame rub along lower edge of painting; small area of overpainting to the lower left; discoloration above tree line to the right; painting examined under black light; cracks and discoloration throughout molding of the frame; nicks and abrasions to the frame.
