An 1805 edition of The Journal of a Tour Into the Territory Northwest of the Alleghany Mountains: Made in the Spring of the Year 1803, with a Geographical and Historical Account of the State of Ohio by Thaddeus Mason Harris. This volume is considered to be an early historical account of the state of Ohio. It features five original foldout maps titled A Map of the Alleghany, Monongahela and Yohiogany Rivers, Map of the State of Ohio, A Plat for Part of the State of Ohio which is Appropriated for Military Services, A Plan of Part of Marietta with the Remains of Ancient Works Found There and A Bird’s Eye View of the Ancient Works on the Muskingum with two of the maps by General Rufus Putnam, Surveyor General of the United States. The map of Ohio is considered to be the first large map of the state. Errata to this volume is located to the front. Also included is a January 1806 edition of The Literary Miscellany, Number III of Volume II, which contains a review of Mason’s book on pages 287-291. The Literary Micscellany was printed and sold by William Hilliard of Cambridge and was published quarterly. These scarce two volumes are housed in a clamshell box with gilt lettering to the front.
