French sculptor Joseph le Guluche was known for his figural and bust terracotta sculptures of various genres from female allegories, to mythological, historical, rural, and Orientalist subjects, among others. Made for a widespread audience, many of Joseph le Guluche’s works, such as this particular sculpture, were produced by Alphonse Hanne (1858-1908), a factory owner of decorative terracotta with whom Joseph le Guluche regularly collaborated in the late 19th and early 20th century.
