1964 "HAP Grieshaber: Woodcuts" Including Woodcut Prints
Item Details
Provenance
From the estate of Nick Bubash.
Helmut Andreas Paul ‘HAP’ Grieshaber was a German artist specialized in woodcut prints. After attending secondary school in Reutlingen, Grieshaber was apprenticed in a print shop while studying art in Stuttgart from 1926-28, before travelling extensively across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. He was forbidden from his art practice and forced into military service under the Nazi Regime in WWII, along with being a prisoner of war in Belgium. After the war, he returned to Germany and used these experiences to fuel his art practice in conjunction to political and environmental activism. Grieshaber’s work was included in the 1959 and 1964 documenta, and retrospectives of his work were shown simultaneously in both East and West Germany in 1979 in honor of his 70th birthday. His work is held in numerous private and public collections worldwide.
