A late 19th-century oil painting on wood panel by well-listed American artist Eugene Benson (New York; 1839 – 1908). This work depicts a quiet scene in front of a stone wall in which an Italian woman and young girl work together as they sort out a ball of yarn. The artist has signed this work to the verso of the panel, where he made additional inscriptions in graphite. This work is presented in a beveled wood frame with a gilt finish.
Benson was known artistically for his romantic, allegorical and Orientalist paintings. He was also a well-regarded American art critic and essayist. His work is represented in the permanent collection of Yale University Art Gallery, as well as in numerous private collections.

- board is bowed; crack to right side of upper edge; accretion across painting surface; scratches and wear to frame.
