Associated to the Surrealists, Wilfredo Lamb is prominently known for his Cubist paintings and printmaking, strongly influenced by voodoo and Caribbean spiritual themes. Lamb began his formal artistic training in his hometown at the Escuela Profesional de Pintura y Escultura, Academia de San Alejandro, Cuba in 1916. Upon graduating, he received a scholarship and moved to Spain, where he spent 14 years refining his technique and continuing his education. In 1938, he moved to Paris where he became associated with Surrealist ideologies and renowned artists Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Miró, Léger, Eluard, Leiris, Tzara, and Zervos. Later in life, Lam returned to Cuba and also traveled to Haiti with the purpose of reconnecting with his roots. He became immersed into spiritual rituals related to the Africanized religion of Santeria, a main source of his artistic inspiration. Lam’s oeuvre has been collected and exhibited by numerous prestigious institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Guggenheim Museum, Tate Gallery, London, Art Institute of Chicago, Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico, among many others.
