Born in Russia, Raphael Soyer emigrated to the United States with his family in 1912. He is recognized as a Social Realist artist, known for his paintings of contemporary men and women in everyday settings. He received art training at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League of New York where he became associated with other renowned artists of his time. His work has been collected and exhibited by numerous art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art where a retrospective of his work was held in 1967.
