Ochtman was best known for his serene Impressionist and Tonalist painted depictions of sunsets, dawn and winter scenes. He attended the Art Students League in New York City in the winter of 1879; in the early to mid 1880s he began exhibiting his works at the National Academy of Design and the American Water Color Society. In 1886, he made his first voyage to Europe, spending substantial time in Holland studying atmospheric painting of the Hague School painters, notably Jacob Maris and Anton Mauve. When he traveled to France, he was deeply influenced by the landscape paintings of Corot. During the height of his artistic career, he was able to sell numerous works and received prominent national awards. His patronage included prominent collectors such as William T. Evans and George Hearn.

Ochtman’s works are represented in the permanent collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Smithsonian National Museum of American Art; Dallas Museum of Art;Yale University Art Gallery; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Butler Institute of American Art; Corcoran Gallery of Art; The Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio; The Newark Museum; Muskegon Museum of Art; and National Academy of Design Museum, among many others.
