A mid 20th century gouache painting on paper by listed artist Edward Laning (American, 1906 – 1981). The work depicts a surrealist style scene comprised of intricate detailing and vibrant pigments. This work was likely created as the previous study of a mural of larger dimensions. The piece is unsigned, although it is inscribed with the artist’s name to the lower right of the matting. The composition is mounted within white matted and presented unframed.

Edward Laning is known for his surrealist-style illustrations and murals. He acquired his formal artistic training at the Art Institute of Chicago and subsequently, he continued his education at Chicago University. Upon graduating, Laning further pursued his artistic career and moved to New York, refining his technique while continuing his education at the Art Students League, working under the likes of historically renowned artists John Sloan, Boardman Robinson, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Max Weber. Later on his life, he became an instructor for various prestigious institutions including the Art Students League, the Cooper Union, and the Kansas City Art Institute.
