A still life oil painting on canvas by Austrian-born Chicago Artist Ludovicus Ferdinandus Josephus Kurz von Goldenstein, known as Louis Kurz (1835-1921). The painting depicts an overturned basket of concord grapes, pears, plums, and a melon against a dark background. The painting is signed ‘L.O.V. Kurz’ along the upper edge, towards the right.
Louis Kurz was born in Austria but moved to Chicago with his family in 1853. Working in both Milwaukee and Chicago, Kurz became renowned as a printmaker, creating romanticized scenes from the Civil War in chromolithographic form along with his partner Alexander Allison. He is also known as a friend of President Lincoln and one of the co-founders of the Art Institute of Chicago shortly after the Great Fire of 1871.

- light craquelure; accretions to metallic trim of frame; light wear to wood on frame with separation at lower right joint.
