Kanō Michinobu (1730-1790), born Shōzaburō (庄三郎) was the son of Eisen Hisanobu (英川古信, also Kanō isen’in Furunobu, 1698-1731) also of the Kanō school, the dominant painting school in Japan from the late 15th century until the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). Michinobu formally took over the Kobikichō Kanō line of the Kanō school in 1731 when he was still an infant. Enjoyed patronage from the shogun Tokugawa Ieharu (徳川家治, 1737-86) and led the Kobikichō line to considerable prominence within the Kanō school. Received the Buddhist title of hogen in 1762, and hoin in 1780, also taking the name Eisen’in in the same year.
