An early 20th century oil painting titled Les Andelys Normandy, France by well-listed French artist Charles Camoin (1879 – 1965). This Fauvist architectural landscape takes place in the streets of the Nothern French commune of Les Andelys. Portrayed in a Fauvist manner, this composition features gestural qualities and saturated pigments. The work is signed ‘Ch. Camoin’ to the lower left. To the verso, the title and an enumeration are inscribed. The piece is presented in a wood frame with a running gold-tone acanthus accent.

French Expressionist and Fauvist Charles Camoin studied under Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He established friendships with several of the leading avant-garde artists such Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet (1875-1947), Henri-Charles Manguin (1874-1949), Georges Rouault (1871-1958) and Jean Puy (1876-1960), to name a few. The artist exhibited at the Salon des Independants, the Salon d’Automne, and the famous 1913 Armory Show in New York. His work has been collected and exhibited by multiple institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Dallas Museum of Art, among others.

Condition

- gesso craquelure and scratches throughout wooden frame; negligible toning throughout; under UV light examination minor areas of inpainting are revealed along the visible edges of painting.
