1872 Author's Proof "Falconry in the British Isles" with Illustrations
Item Details
An 1872 author’s proof of the second edition of Falconry in the British Isles by Francis Henry Salvin and William Broderick. The unbound typescript begins with the introduction and is heavily edited and corrected throughout, presumably by the authors, often with entire pages of handwritten text tipped in. Also included are the original hand-colored lithographs, some hand titled, as well as an original watercolor by William Brodrick. After the 1855 first edition, the lithograph stones were not saved, so the illustrations were necessarily recreated.
The top of the introduction page reads ‘Revise + proof returned to Printers Nov. 25th 1872’, identifying this as the author’s proof of the second edition which was published by John Van Voorst in London in 1873. According to Harting, ‘the second edition is to be preferred for the emendations and additions to the text’ and notes that it is the ‘best modern book in English on the art and practice of Falconry.’
