Born in Minnesota, Erle Loran studied at the Minneapolis School of Art under Cameron Booth. In 1926, he won the Paris Prize, allowing him to travel to Europe and live in the studio of the renowned Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. The artist returned to the United States and developed his early style featuring primary colors and lyrical abstractions. Over time, he began creating more expressionistic landscapes rendered with vibrant colors, sinuous delineations, and loose forms. By the 1960s, Loran was living in New York, studying with famed Abstract Expressionist Hans Hoffman. However, at this time, his work was evolving into a unique blend of Op and Pop Art characteristics, often featuring hard edge forms and shapes. Loran’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Denver Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum, among others.
