A late 19th century oil painting on canvas titled Washwoman at a Stream by French artist Edma Morizot-Pontillon (1839 – 1921). This Barbizon style work features a figural landscape comprised of three washwomen approaching a body of water situated among a densely forested area. The piece is signed “E. Morizot” to the lower left. It is presented in an elaborate gilt and gesso Louis XV style frame with prominent foliate cartouches. A metal plate inscribed with the artist’s name is affixed to the lower edge of the frame and a descriptive label is adhered to the verso.

French artist Edma Morizot/Morisot (Pontillon) was the older sister of the celebrated Impressionist Berthe Morisot. She and her sister studied under Joseph Guichard, a student of renowned Neoclassicist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. After spending years studying the Old Masters, Edma and her sister were drawn to the Barbizon School and began painting en plein air under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, beginning in 1860. Corot’s tutelage and connections led them to Edouard Manet, whose brother Berthe eventually married. Edma specialized in landscapes and portraits, which she exhibited in the Paris Salons from 1864 to 1868. She also sat for many portraits painted by her sister, some of which are housed in the Musée D’Orsay, the National Gallery of Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among other institutions.
