Letters Patent and Great Seal Issued by King George III, 1774

Item Details

This letters patent was issued on April 8th, 1774 under the Great Seal of King George III and names Sir John Burland as one of the Barons of the Court Exchequer. It has Rococo-styled grotesque marginalia printed in intaglio with a portrait of the King to the upper left, beneath which are adhered three revenue stamps. Hanging from the lower edge is the original Great Seal of King George III molded in natural wax to certify the document. It is presented framed under acrylic glass with windows to the verso allowing view of the seal’s reverse and text to the patent verso.

- discoloration, creases, and warping to parchment sheet; accretion, discoloration, and slight fraying to seal cord; wear to Great Seal includes chips to wax molding on both sides; series of pin holes to either side margin of parchment used for registration lines, and one 0.25" hole just below center; some overall surface wear with fading and loss of ink from document; scratches and edge wear to frame.
