A mid-19th century black lacquer papier-mâché ladies sewing box, featuring intricate mother of pearl and abalone inlay throughout. It opens to reveal a segmented top, organized for sewing accessories and tools, and four pull out drawers with mother of pearl handles. The bottom drawer converts to a small writing desk. The castle top design has been seen on similar extant sewing boxes from Scotland, however no clear attribution could be made on this unsigned work.
