An oil painting on canvas of a landscape attributed to well-listed artist Benjamin Champney (American, 1817-1907). He was known for romantic depictions of American landscapes and was a 19th-century artist part of the White Mountain School of painters. This work exhibits a nearly uncultivated land with a wooded landscape with stream. The painting is inscribed to the lower edge of the canvas ‘B. Champney.’ It is displayed in a wood and gesso frame with a gilt finish.
Condition
- wear and areas of loss along edge of canvas; slight darkening of surface; small tear to canvas at lower left with minor areas of loss paint; wear to frame including areas of loss, cracks and repairs; picture light tested and not working at time of assessment.
