Originally based in Cleveland, Ferdinand Burgdorff studied at the Cleveland School of Art, and later in Paris with Rene Menard and Florence Este. After moving West in 1907, he work as an illustrator for Sunset Magazine and other publications, and became known for his paintings of the American West with a particular focus on desert landscapes and the Monterey Peninsula. Inspired by Taos and Santa Fe painters of the early 20th century, Burgdorff also painted genre scenes, most of which featured romanticized depictions of Native Americans in Arizona and New Mexico.
