1633 “Lathams Falconry” with “Lathams New and Second Booke of Faulconry”

Item Details

A 1633 copy of Latham’s first and second book of falconry bound together as is typical of the title (STC 15269; ESTC S123200 & S123201). The first book, Latham’s Falconry has the incorrect title page, with the title page of the second book duplicated.

Inscription on the inner board reads “This book belonged to my uncle George Cartwright an eminent falkoner. He died in 1819 aged 82” above the bookplate of Edmund Cartwright with the family crest with the motto “Defend the Fold”. George Cartwright (English, 1739/40-1819) was an army officer and noted explorer, especially of Labrador. An apparent signature of George Cartwright is on p. 3 of the first book. Reverend Edmund Cartwright (English, d. 1833), whose inscription and bookplates on the inner front and back boards was the son of Edmund Cartwright (English, 1743-1823), the inventor of the power loom.

Condition

- Significant scuffs to boards with bumped corners and edgewear, general 18th century hand with inscriptions on inside cover and on select pages throughout the text;
First Book: The original title page of the first book is missing and replaced with another copy of the title page of the second book; title page has “New and Second” blacked out with ink on title page; missing first page (blank).
Second Book: page 51 is misprinted as 50; missing gathering N (pp. 89-96); leaf T3 (pp. 141-2) is damaged and re-tipped in; a light water stain on later gatherings along edge not affecting text.
