Painter and illustrator Lester J. Ambrose studied at the Art Students League and the Chase School with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. A member of the Society of Independent Artists, he was known for his figural interior scenes, and exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design, among other institutions.

- canvas has been re-stretched; frame rub to canvas edges; some discoloration to varnish; overpainting present throughout, notably on figures and around canvas edges; discoloration to verso.
