Stamped to the base below signature “France”
Incised mark to the underside appears to read “615”
François Auguste Hippolyte Peyrol came from a family of sculptors, including his father Hippolyte Peyrol, who was the student of Antoine-Louis Barye, and brother-in-law of Rosa and Isidore Bonheur. Known for his sculptures of animal subjects, Francois studied under his uncle Isidore and his aunt Rosa. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1880 and went on the receive several awards and medals at the Salons. In 1908, Francois was awarded the prestigious Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur.
Condition
- dust throughout; some abrasions and wear to patina particularly to the head of tiger and to the base; oxidation mark to the tail of tiger.
