Son of Italian immigrants, Gustave Cimiotti, Jr. was born in New York and studied at the Art Students League with John Twachtmann, then continued his studies at the Académie Julian and the Académie Delécluse. A close friend of John La Farge and Winslow Homer, Cimiotti was particularly celebrated for his landscapes and was referred to as “Grand Old Man of Romanticism”. The artist exhibited his work at a number of significant shows, such as the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 and the New York Armory Show in 1913. Other institutions that exhibited his work include the Corcoran Gallery, the National Academy of Design, and the Bauer-Folsom Galleries, among others.
