Born in New York City during 1867, Paul Von Eschenbach received his education at the Art Students League. He moved to Cincinnati in 1900 to hold the post of Director of the Design Department at the Henderson Lithographic Company. Due to America’s rising anti-German sentiment in the years leading up to and during WWI, he legally changed his name to its English equivalent of Ashbrook in 1917. His full time position and teaching left little time for his own art, so he became a freelance designer for the Strobridge Lithograph Company; there he he created several circus posters for Barnum & Bailey and traveled extensively in Europe and Mexico. Today, his work can be found in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cincinnati Art Museum and The Historic New Orleans Collection.
