A large Hummel Madonna Plaque HUM 48/V. According to the hallmark to the reverse side, Western Germany stacked, and two holes to use for hanging on the wall with a cord, it is either a 1956 or 1957 model (see photo). This wonderful plaque has the darker brown interior, the Madonna and Child have golden eyes, the Child has white glazed garments while the Madonna’s are reddish, the Madonna’s hand and fingers are raised and individualized, the Child’s hand and feet are also raised and individualized.

The sketch art of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, OSF, began to appear in the 1930’s in Germany and Switzerland. Hummel’s ‘art cards’ became popular throughout Germany, catching the eye of Franz Goebel, porcelain maker. Goebel acquired rights to turn Hummel’s drawing into figurines, producing the first line in 1935. The base for the popularity was among German immigrants on the East Coast of the U.S., first being transported to this country by American men in the armed forces.

Condition

This is in excellent condition for age – no crazing, chips, etc.
