Item Details

Edmund Teske (American; 1911 – 1996)
Untitled (Tree bark abstraction), mid 20th century
Signed to the lower left on mount board

Edmund Teske is particularly known for his photographic experimentation in solarization, chemical toning, and combining printing. He began taking photographs with his mother’s Kodak Scout 2-C camera, at the age of seven. After graduating high school, Teske built a darkroom in the basement of his parent’s house, and focused on taking pictures of the streets of his home town. In 1936, he traveled to Wisconsin for a fellowship under Frank Lloyd Wright, and later taught alongside László Moholy Nagy at the New Bauhaus Institute of Design in Chicago. After teaching, he worked as an assistant to Berenice Abbott in New York, then moved to Los Angeles where he worked for Paramount Pictures. His work has been exhibited by the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the International Center of Photography, among many other prestigious institutions.
