1904 Robert Glier Rudolf Wurlitzer Violin and Dodd Bow

An antique 1904 Robert Glier Wurlitzer violin, produced during the luthier’s short tenure in Cincinnati. Raised in musical instrument manufacturing hub Markneukirchen, Germany to a family of renowned wind instrument makers, Robert Glier immigrated to the United States and worked for the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company in Cincinnati, Ohio from circa 1883 to 1910. The violin bears a paper label reading ‘Robert Glier Violin-maker, The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company selling agents, Cincinnati’ as well as hand-written serial or model number 2694 and hand-written and printed ‘Anno 1904.’ Includes a wood fully-lined bow, likely pernambuco, stamped ‘Dodd’ above the frog. Also includes a violin case with a black vinyl exterior and green velour interior.

Condition

- open seams, particularly to lower bout.
- lower bout rib is buckled and shows previous repair to seams, crack forming near button.
- nut sits flush with fingerboard but exposed, unfinished wood visible at attachment to scroll.
- scratching to finish with missing varnish at the pegbox and cloudy varnish to lower bout and upper bout on the treble side.
- bow is unchecked for cambre and playability.
- case shows wear to interior from points of contact with the violin; wear to exterior consistent with use, some vinyl is fraying at seams.
- tailpiece, bridge, and rosin are included.
- the eyelet for the bow is stripped and the bow does not loosen entirely.
