A fan of bullfighting at an early age, Francisco de Goya created a series of etchings depicting the different types of bullfighting in Spain first published in 1816, and other editions followed. The series spans from the Middle Ages to his contemporary time, exhibiting the evolution in a variety of scenes including moments of triumph, mishaps, and gore. To produce the prints, Goya used a combination of intaglio techniques including etching and aquatint – a technique that he was famed for mastering and pioneering in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
