A celebrated illustrator of the American west, Herbert Morton Stoops studied at Utah State College and the Chicago Art Institute. Early in his career, he was employed as an artist for newspapers including the Examiner, Morning Call, and Tribune. He gained recognition for his depictions of soldiers while serving as an artillery officer in World War I. After the war, Stoops established his reputation as an illustrator for magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Colliers, and Blue Book Magazine, among others. He was a member of multiple artist associations including The Society of Illustrators, the American Arts Professional League, and Artists’ Guild of New York.
