1818 "Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire" in Hardcover
Item Details
An antique hardcover volume titled Narrative of an Expedition to Explore the River Zaire, Usually Called the Congo by Captain J.K. Tuckey, published 1818 by William B. Gilley of New York. It chronicles a British expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816. The expedition was ultimately a failure when it could not progress due to rapids and many of the crew died of fever, with Tuckey dying after reaching the coast. However it raised interest in African exploration and is an important primary European source on Africa which predates the better-known and more successful explorations of the later 19th century. It is bound in a gray paperboard hardcover with an applied label to the spine.
