An early 20th century oil painting by Cincinnati-based artist Edith Walters Harper, dated circa 1920. This portrait depicts a woman with short hair tied back in a yellow headscarf, dramatic light playing off of her features and the gestural strokes of white paint behind her. The work is signed to the lower right and to the verso of the canvas. It is presented in a wood and gesso composite frame that is molded in an Art Deco style with inscribed shell corners and stylized leaf panels. A metal placard to the lower center reads ‘Bequest of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Wichgar’.

Condition

- slight discoloration to varnish on painting; craqueuelure throughout; edge wear to canvas, visible in corners where frame does not meet evenly with piece; restoration includes overpainting to left ear of subject and to dime-sized areas in both lower corners, as well as some uneven cleaning of varnish; scratches and chips to frame finish, with cracks to molding in corner joins; tarnish to placard on frame.
