An oil painting on canvas titled Female Nude by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated circa 1948. This work depicts the portrait of a nude female figure portrayed from her profile and comprised of evocative brushstrokes in vibrant hues. The piece is unsigned and marked with artist’s estate stamp to the verso. Additionally to the verso, artist’s name and date are included. This composition is presented unframed.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.

- repaired cut to the upper left corner of canvas; minor wear throughout the edges of canvas; minor stains and minor discoloration throughout the composition.
