An early 18th-century copperplate engraving on hand-laid paper after the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (1483 – 1520). The inscription below the engraving roughly translates to ‘Empedocles from Girgenti, a junior Pythagorean disciple, Philosopher, and Poet, born the year IV of the Olympiad LXXVI. He descended, threw himself into the Mount Etna. It was from Raphael placed in his School of Athens in the Vatican.’
