Maxwell was born in Frost Prairie, Arkansas in 1925 and always asserted that his forms and textures were probably inspired by the vast unbroken landscape there. He graduated from high school in Louisiana, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Principia College in Illinois. He completed some graduate work at Claremont College in California, and while there had his first museum show in Stockton, California. In 1951 Maxwell’s work was included in an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art alongside works of Picasso, Miro and Matta. His work has since been exhibited across the United States, Europe, Australia and Asia.

- glass has been removed; lower margin of frame has been bent outward; wear to edges of frame; scratches present throughout frame; toning to paper; water stains present to lower margin of matting.
