A member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Mary Shaw graduated from Carnegie Tech with a Bachelors degree in painting and illustration. She was acquainted with other Pittsburgh-based artists such as Esther Phillips and Milton Weiss, and significantly chauffered famed artist Henri Matisse around Pittsburgh when he came in town for the 1930 Carnegie International. Shaw was commissioned by the WPA to paint murals throughout Pittsburgh, including murals for the East Liberty Branch of the Carnegie Library and the 1936 History of Costume series. Considered one of the most influential Pittsburgh artists and teachers of her time, she was awarded Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in 1963.

- accretions and debris throughout the painting; discoloration to the paper; minor abrasions throughout; lifting and loss to the strings particularly to the center; stretcher marks; stretcher joint protruding and warping canvas to the lower left corner; marks particularly to the edges and lower corners of painting; frame remnants adhered to lower and right edges.
