An oil painting on canvas laid on wood panel by artist and illustrator Nicholas Panayotti Zarokilli (Greek/American, 1879-1945). The painting depicts a young woman seated in a curule chair and dressed in a flowing gown in shades of pale blue and lavender. Loose pink and white roses are scattered at her feet. The painting is housed in an elaborate gilt wood and composition frame with beaded sight, fluted cove, acanthus leaf corners, and ribbon and flower border.

Nicholas Panayotti Zarokilli was a Greek artist born in Turkey who spent his adult years in New York working as an illustrator. ‘Z.P. Nikolaki’ is the pseudonym with which he signed his work. He created numerous images for advertisements, fashion magazines, and war propaganda, mostly featuring idealized young women like the one depicted here.

Condition

- craquelure throughout; varnish has darkened overall; frame has rubbed canvas at edges, especially at upper and right edge; four small dots of inpainting to the lower right quadrant and two to the lower left; inpainting to the chair back and drapery under figure’s right arm; frame is cracking at corners and has compo loss to the lower left corner as well as flaking in several places; gilt has been painted over with gold-tone paint in most areas.
