Now recognized as one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century, Inness was influenced early in his career by the Hudson River School before he studied the Old Masters and artists of the Barbizon School during trips to Italy and France. In Europe he was introduced to the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was significant for him as he expressed that spiritualism in the works of his maturity from 1879–1894. </p></div></td></tr></table><table class="image_block block-5" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" role="presentation" style="mso-table-lspace:0;mso-table-rspace:0"><tr><td class="pad" style="width:100%"><div class="alignment" align="center" style="line-height:10px"><div style="max-width:600px"><img src="https://braze-images.com/appboy/communication/assets/image_assets/images/66e1f653b02bfb00656e2d25/original.jpg?1726084691" style="display:block;height:auto;border:0;width:100%" width="600" height="auto"></div></div></td></tr></table><table class="paragraph_block block-6" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="10" cellspacing="0" role="presentation" style="mso-table-lspace:0;mso-table-rspace:0;word-break:break-word"><tr><td class="pad"><div style="color:#101b24;direction:ltr;font-family:'Open Sans',Arial,Sans-serif;font-size:14px;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:0;line-height:normal;text-align:left;mso-line-height-alt:NaNpx"><p dir="ltr" style="margin:0"> Inness was prolific, his career spanned more than forty years and evolved through distinct phases yet his works were consistently acclaimed for their success in eliciting a powerful depth of atmosphere, mood and emotion. Inness was a master of light, color and shadow using these tools to capture both the earthly and the ethereal sense of any locale. His deeply complex scenes often illustrate the juxtaposition of sharply refined details with a hazy and blurred atmosphere. This of course was his intent, evoking the interweaving both the spiritual and physical nature of the experience. In Inness’s view his paintings demonstrated the “reality of the unseen”. </p></div></td></tr></table><table class="image_block block-7" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" role="presentation" style="mso-table-lspace:0;mso-table-rspace:0"><tr><td class="pad" style="width:100%"><div class="alignment" align="center" style="line-height:10px"><div style="max-width:600px"><img src="https://braze-images.com/appboy/communication/assets/image_assets/images/66e1f6680df5010063b053c2/original.jpg?1726084712" style="display:block;height:auto;border:0;width:100%" width="600" height="auto"></div></div></td></tr></table><table class="paragraph_block block-8" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="10" cellspacing="0" role="presentation" style="mso-table-lspace:0;mso-table-rspace:0;word-break:break-word"><tr><td class="pad"><div style="color:#101b24;direction:ltr;font-family:'Open Sans',Arial,Sans-serif;font-size:14px;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:0;line-height:normal;text-align:left;mso-line-height-alt:NaNpx"><p dir="ltr" style="margin:0"> During the remaining decade of his life, Inness settled in Montclair, New Jersey and his work expressed a more abstract handling of shape with softened edges and saturation of color. George Inness died in 1894 while abroad in Scotland. As reported by his son, he was enjoying a particularly stunning sunset when he exclaimed “My God. Oh how beautiful!” He collapsed and died moments later. A public funeral for Inness was held at the National Academy of Design followed by a memorial exhibition at the Fine Arts Building in New York City. </p></div></td></tr></table></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><!-- End --></body></html>
