10 OF THE MOST ICONIC HANDBAGS OF ALL TIME
GUCCI JACKIE
The late Jackie Onassis was one of the biggest fashion icons of the 1960s, so it only makes sense that she would inspire one of the most iconic handbags ever made ― or did she? Contrary to popular belief, the Jackie bag by Gucci was original named the Constance, and made its debut during the 1950s. But when Jackie O was photographed carrying the bag a decade later, the company decided to rename it. In 2009, the exclusive New Jackie was released to great fanfare. Highly sought after, making just one New Jackie could take up to 13 hours.

HERMÈS BIRKIN
There’s quite a waiting list to own a Hermès Birkin, and at times, it can take longer than half a decade to get your hands on one. This may be due to the fact that it takes two full days just to create one of these iconic handbags. Named for Jane Birkin, Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas created the bag after sitting next to the singer on an airplane. They talked handbags during the flight, and Birkin admitted that she often had a hard time finding one that she loved. After that, Dumas set out to make a bag to meet her needs.

PRADA BACKPACK
The Prada backpack may not be the most elegant handbag on the list, but it’s certainly the most practical. Miuccia Prada’s idea to design this smart waterproof handbag may have seemed strange back in 1978, but it turned the Prada name into one of the most famous brands in the world today.

LADY DIOR
We have the late Princess Diana to thank for the trend that turned the Lady Dior handbag into an iconic purse. The bag was a gift from Bernadette Chirac, the First Lady of France, back in 1995. Diana loved it so much that she carried it everywhere, and fashionistas around the world took notice. As a result, Dior renamed the bag in her honor.

CHANEL 2.55
This fashion staple made its debut in February 1955, and it has yet to lose favor with celebrities and non-celebrities alike. Evening bags were all the rage in those days, but Coco Chanel sought to make them a little more convenient. She added a chain so that women who carried them to formal events could drape them over their shoulders. That iconic quilted look was inspired by the designer’s love of horses and the padded jackets jockeys wore.

LOUIS VUITTON SPEEDY
The Speedy by Louis Vuitton dates all the way back to 1932, but its classic style is timeless, and you may have Audrey Hepburn to thank for that. George Vuitton originally created the bag as a small carry-on for air travel, but Hepburn loved it so much she contacted the company and begged them to make it in an appropriate size for a handbag. They obliged, and though it’s gone through many makeovers throughout the decades, the Speedy remains one of the most popular handbags in the world.
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN SKULL CLUTCH
The late Alexander McQueen had a knack for mixing and matching all things glamorous with all things morbid, and the brand’s iconic Skull Clutch is the perfect example of that. Despite only debuting in 2007, it’s been a red carpet staple ever since. With each passing year, it receives a little makeover, but no matter what those changes are, it remains the must-have clutch for award shows, movie premieres, and other celebrity-filled events.
BALENCIAGA CITY
If you’ve ever wanted to let your inner bad girl shine, the Balenciaga City is the perfect handbag for you. It looks like something you’d pack for a motorcycle road trip, and its studs, tassels, and aged lambskin give it even more of an edge. They don’t call it the “motorcycle bag,” for nothing. Even though it was launched in 1997, you can still buy it today. The best icons stick around.
FENDI BAGUETTE
The Fendi Baguette is one of the more colorful bags on the list, as it’s often designed using sequins, fur, beads, and vibrant shades of leather. The bag reached the height of its popularity in the 2000s when Sarah Jessica Parker’s Sex and the City character carried it in numerous episodes.
MULBERRY ALEXA
If you ever thought Mulberry’s Alexa has some major Mad Men vibes going on, you aren’t too far off from the designer’s original idea. The company’s creative director spotted model Alexa Chung carrying an old Mulberry briefcase, which had belonged to her father, through an airport. That inspired the Alexa, which the company named for the model and designed as a throw-back to the old-school Mulberry briefcases.
