Her unique work is often executed in a folk tradition, featuring whimsical elements to portray legends, folktales and native subjects.
Vidal studied at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of Cordoba University before traveling to New York in 1966. It was in New York where her life changed when she met Hungarian-born artist Ilonka Karasz who was a student of G.I. Gurdjief and belonged to the Wiener Werkstatte movement. Vidal’s career as an illustrator began as she studied with Karasz, which they would continue for several years. In time, she began creating designs for Unicef cards and record covers, and her illustrations started to appear in multiple magazines and publications, such as Gourmet, Bon Appetit, The New York Times, Woman’s Day, and The New Yorker. Vidal has illustrated over a dozen books throughout her career, including the prize-winning book Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain by Verna Aardema which became a PBS Reading Rainbow selection, and Little Lek Longtail Learns to Sleep by Bette Killion which was an award-winning Finalist in the 2016 “Best Book” Awards. She also illustrated part of the PBS series Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers in 1988, which was followed by several more book illustrations.
